Two jail employees accused of sex with inmates

Saturday, April 19, 2003 WARREN, Ohio (AP) — Two county jail guards have pleaded innocent to charges that they engaged in sex acts with female inmates.

Michael Battee, 33, of Warren, was indicted on four counts of sexual battery. John Clutter, 28, faces seven counts.

Battee, who worked for the Trumbull County Sheriff’s department for eight years, resigned in February, a day before he was to take a lie-detector test, Sheriff Thomas Altiere said. Clutter, a two-year jail employee, resigned in January, on the same day he was to take a polygraph.

Cutter’s attorney, Phil Vigorito, said his client is “disappointed about the charges and intends to fight them.”

Both men were freed after posting $10,000 bonds.

The indictments state the sexual battery took place in July, October and December of 2002.

The inmates told detectives that Clutter would take them to a closet area where there are no security cameras and give them candy bars in exchange for the sexual acts.

Altiere said it’s difficult seeing his former employees being arrested.

“This is unfortunate, but we police our own,” Altiere said.
